There is no definitive answer to this question, as the development of electric ships varies among different countries and regions.
On a global scale, the application of battery powered ships is currently in the exploration and demonstration period, with insufficient operational experience. As of the end of May 2019, the global number of electric ships was 155, including 75 operating ships and 80 planned to be built. The application of large capacity battery powered ships between 1000KWh and 4000KWh has been achieved.
More than 20 pure battery powered ships have been built in China, and more than 10 pure battery powered ships are under construction or planned to be built. Before 2015, the application of battery powered ships in China was limited to small ships below 600KWh; After 2015, the maximum battery capacity used will reach 3000KWh, and all of them are lithium iron phosphate battery.
Port supporting facilities, especially charging facilities, are one of the factors limiting the development of electric ships. As of the end of 2018, China had built over 2400 sets of shore power equipment, which had many problems such as mismatches with ship power supply and could not directly charge pure battery powered ships. However, it provided a good hardware foundation for battery powered ships to obtain power.
Among the top ten battery manufacturers globally, domestic manufacturers account for five. In the first quarter of 2020, the total installed capacity of domestic power batteries was about 5.68GWh, involving 51 power battery companies. Among them, Ningde Times, BYD, Guoxuan High tech, Yiwei Lithium Energy, AVIC Lithium, and others were among the top ranked companies, with the main installed products being new energy vehicles.
